New Year, New Goals (Part I)

New YearNew Goals

Happy New Year! I hope you all had a fantastic holiday with your loved ones.

I love this time of year! Everything feels fresh and motivation is high; it’s the best time of year to start working on new goals.

The harder part is sticking to those goals (which we’ll get to) but first, we need to decide what they are. Having a vision of what you want makes it that much easier to get. It helps you focus and then make decisions that will move you in the right direction. It also helps you avoid certain tasks that could easily distract you from the bigger picture.

So to start, I like to do the Wheel of Life exercise. It’s basically a life audit of 8 specific aspects of your life. Feel free to change or ignore categories that do not currently apply to your life. The idea is to let your mind go. Don’t be afraid to think big at first. You need to figure out what you truly want before you can start taking tangible steps towards it. Take a few minutes to visualize and write out the ideal version of each area. Then rate where you feel you are in comparison right now on a scale from 1 (farthest away) to 10 (already there). Also, don’t worry if your vision and wants change, it’s kind of expected that they will. They will most definitely change as you grow and you can make adjustments when this happens. I often do this exercise bi-monthly to make sure I’m on track.

These are a few examples of the types of questions to ask yourself when going through the exercise. If you would like to do a more in-depth version, you can always contact me here and we can go through it together.

Family/Friends

  1. Who do I want to spend more time with?
  2. Who do I want to spend less time with?

Significant Other

  1. How do I want to feel with my significant other?
  2. What types of things do we do together?

Personal Growth

  1. What do I want to learn?
  2. What have I always wanted to try?

Fun & Leisure

  1. Where do I want to go?
  2. What do I want to do?

Home Environment

  1. How do I want to feel in my space?
  2. What would I like to have?

Career

  1. What kind of impact do I want to have on the community/city/country/world?
  2. What talents and interests will I contribute to the community/city/country/world?

Money

  1. How much do I need to make to live comfortably?
  2. What would I do if I won $60M?

Health

  1. What will I be able to do as my healthiest self?
  2. What does being my healthiest self mean to me?

Another way to do this is to create a Vision Board. A vision board is simply a montage of pictures of your ideal life. You can use the same questions to get an idea of what you want and then either cut out pictures from magazines to create your vision board or use an app (such as Pic Collage or Pinterest). The key is to have it visible or easily accessible as a visual guide to keep you heading in the right direction.

What is one area that you really want to focus on?

  1. This will be useful to reference throughout the year, and I always mean to do a vision board, but never get round to it, thanks for the much needed reminder.

One area I want to focus on the most, is making memories with my daughter, we’ve had a tough start, and would like to show her as much as I can. Xx
